About the Bookazine

Remembering is not passive. It’s a verb.

In collaboration with McClatchy Media, the 9/11 supplemental independent publication shares edited extracts from Keeping Our Nation’s Promise, along with a deep and resonant photographic narrative. Our hope is that readers will return to and revisit this publication for years to come as they search for examples of courage that rise above politics or headlines. It is meant to spark conversation at kitchen tables and in classrooms, and encourage the telling of other stories still waiting inside families and communities.

The promise made in the aftermath of September 11 was never only about vigilance or resolve. It was and is about remembering our humanity in the face of horror. It is about carrying forward the unmistakable clarity of who we are. And it is about teaching future generations how people responded.

As with our approach to Keeping Our Nation’s Promise, we leaned into the fact that remembering is not passive. It’s a verb, an act of choosing to keep stories alive so the people in them continue to live. To remember is to defy forgetting. It’s to hold the line against erasure.

The supplemental independent publication includes profiles on leadership, resilience, legacy, and remembering, featuring the stories of Andy Card, Will Jimeno, Heather “Lucky” Penney, Allison Black, and others.
